8 Tips for Natural Body Detox

Every day we’re exposed to a world of toxins. We absorb them through our skin with each beauty product we use. We inhale them in our homes and cities through polluted air. We even ingest them through some of the foods we eat. Lighten up this month by following some simple steps for safe and natural body detox.

Put a lemon in it: Give your body a little love in the morning by downing a glass of lemon water first thing. Keep the water room temperature and use the juice from one lemon to stir into your glass. This simple drink works to support digestion and detoxify the liver.

Add flavor: With cilantro, that is. Making use of this fresh herb may help flush heavy metals and toxins from your body. Go organic, if you can, and sprinkle chopped cilantro on everything from tacos to salads and stir-fry.

Time to sweat: Sweating may help rid your body of accumulated toxins by, quite literally, washing them out of your system. Hit the gym to get your heart pumping and sweat glands activated, or slip into a sauna for a relaxing winter escape that both heals and warms.

Eat up: A healthy diet of whole, plant-based foods is a critical step in detoxing your body. Take your diet one step further by making a point to add more sulfur-rich foods to your plate. Sulfur may help your liver filter unwanted chemicals from your body. Load up on sulfur-laden eggs, legumes, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, garlic and whole grains.

Massage: A professional massage can feel like a true indulgence, but touch therapy may help increase circulation and blood flow, helping to loosen toxins from your tissue and muscle. After a massage, be sure to drink lots of lukewarm, filtered water to help the process along. Breathe deep, relax and enjoy!

Swap it: If you haven’t done so already, make it a goal to trade one potentially harmful product in your home for another that’s safe and natural. Start with items you use daily that cover a large surface area. Good places to start are body lotions, soaps and face creams.

Say om: Stress can wreak havoc on our bodies. Cut down on its effects by dedicating time to meditate each day. Your practice doesn’t have to be complicated – just set aside 15 minutes to start and focus on your breathing. Breathe deep: Proper deep breathing can help oxygenate your body. It’s good for your cells, your body and your mind. To make sure you’re doing it right, place your hands on your stomach. Breathe deeply and slowly so that you feel your hands rise and fall with each breath. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth.
