Healthy Treats On-The-Go: Snack Hacks For Your Next RoadtripIt can sometimes be difficult to make healthy choices and eat all natural foods when we’re on the go. With sugar loaded, artificially colored convenience foods and snacks lurking around every corner, feeding yourself and your kids healthy treats and wholesome snacks can be tough!

This is particularly true when traveling. Now that sunny days and summer vacation season is here, you might be planning a road trip or getaway, which obviously calls for some portable snacks to keep tummies full and tempers steady.

The good news is that you don’t have to resort to gas station candies, or a pit-stop at the drive-thru burger joint. With a little forethought and planning, you can create healthy snacks that are perfect for when you’re out and about!

Portable Healthy Snack Preparation

You may not realize it, but convenience foods come with more hazards than simply their ingredients and preservatives.

A study by the Silent Spring Institute actually found that one third of fast food packaging contains fluorinated chemicals, which have been linked to cancer, thyroid problems, and changes in hormone functioning, as well as a decreased immune response in children!

Suffice to say, it isn’t enough to ensure the food you eat is natural and healthy — the packaging has to be, too. This is why if you’re creating your own healthy snacks, you need to ensure that you prepare and package them correctly.

It’s a good idea to invest in some ‘green’ food containers, such as the Thinkbaby BPA Free Bento Box. While you’re at it, a few reusable snack bags like those in the Blue Avocado (re)zip range wouldn’t go amiss either! Less waste = a greener planet, after all.

Healthy Snack Recipes for Travelling

These portable, fridge-free healthy treat recipes are perfect for road trips, days out at the beach, or any time where you know you’ll be away from home.

Candied Nuts

These are great for popping into a ziplock bag and munching throughout your trip. Simply slow roast peanuts, pecans, walnuts, cashews — or any other nuts you fancy — with organic honey and a little salt. If you’re looking for simple and healthy treats, nuts are definitely the way to go!

Homemade Jerky

Jerky is great for a healthy protein hit — but the store bought varieties often contains artificial preservatives and a lot of sodium! Making jerky is simple — simply mix together garlic powder, a little organic honey, paprika, and black pepper in a bowl, and brush onto thinly sliced beef strips (top round). Bake the strips in a preheated oven at 175 degrees for 3 to 4 hours until dry and deliciously chewy.

Granola Bars

These are great healthy treats and are perfect for traveling or for keeping in the pantry at home. Simply mix together 2 cups of rolled oats with half a cup of organic maple syrup, sunflower seeds, a tablespoon of extra virgin coconut oil and a sprinkling of dried mixed berries. Spread the mixture onto a lined baking tray, and bake for 25 minutes until golden, at about 325 degrees. Once cooled, cut into bite-size pieces and enjoy with a sliced apple.
