Behind the Brand: Marley's Monsters
Marley’s Monsters is an eco-friendly shop specializing in gorgeous and unique handmade nursing pads, hooded towels, and other mommy/baby essentials. Ecocentric Mom featured this great brand in our September Mom and Baby Box, in which our moms received a set of bamboo cotton washcloths. The company was founded by Sarah Dooley when she was on maternity leave and pregnant with her oldest child, Marley. Sarah taught herself to sew, and from there, the brand was born. We had the privilege of speaking with Sarah about Marley’s Monsters, so be sure to read on to learn more about this sweet and talented mama.
It was very difficult to learn, but I was so determined! And I’ve always welcomed a new craft with open arms. We had bought some cloth wipes from a local shop and discovered how useful they were. I knew a large stash would be necessary and thought it would be fun to make them in a bunch of wild prints. So I bit the bullet and bought a serger. I was always intrigued by serging because of the simplicity of the look and thought this would be a good opportunity to learn. We still have the original cloth wipes I learned on in our stash. It’s fun to know how many disposables just one single cloth wipe has replaced over the course of almost four years!
Oh, of course! It can be very challenging. But it has been extremely rewarding. The challenges are mostly having to multi-task, which every mama knows is a struggle! As she got older, she started going to pre-school. Marley is a very social and active girl, so she loves it and it gives me more time to focus on the business. I was even able to move the business out of my home, so that I can have a bit more division between work and family life. And now, we have a new baby, so I am learning a whole new level of multi-tasking with him and managing the flow of business. It’s amazing how much you can get done during a 2 hour nap!
This is a hard question, because I have a special relationship with all of my products! If I had to choose, my favorite product right now would have to be my nursing pads. Mostly because I’m nursing again and it’s reminding me how well they really work! I tried so many that just didn’t work when I was nursing Marley and I hadn’t developed the perfect design for them until the end of my nursing days. It’s so nice to jump right in this time and know I’ll be protected from leaks and irritation.
I wish I knew how extremely difficult it would be. I thought I could just start a website and the customers would just magically come. It has taken so much dedication! And if I wasn’t as passionate as I am, there is no way I would have survived. It has been a series of roller coasters, but there is truly nothing else I’d rather be doing. My one tip- if it’s something you believe you should be doing, don’t give up!
What are your future plans and goals for Marley’s Monsters?
I have loved the pace we have grown so far, and would love to continue to grow organically at that same natural pace. We’ve had some huge peaks, but manageable. I’m more of a go with the flow kinda girl. I welcome each new opportunity with open arms and mostly just try to stay a little bit ahead of each new growth spurt. But of course I would love our reusable products to become mainstream in this world full of disposables.
